Mott Haven's Labyrinth dedicated to victims of terrorism

In various cultures, labyrinths have been used for thousands of years as meditation devices. On the morning of September 11 a labyrinth was dedicated in Mott Haven to help in the healing of the scars from last year's terrorist attacks.
Located on the ground of the George Hardy Houses, E136th Street between Brown Place and Willis Avenue, the Peace in the Community Labyrinth was opened to the public. The event featured a walk through the labyrinth and prayers for peace.
"Peace is possible if we all work together," said Katherine Gordy-Levine of the Visiting Nurse Service, one of the sponsors of the event. As the walk began, participants joined hands and formed a human chain leading into the labyrinth. Once inside Father John Grange, from St. Jerome's Church, conducted a brief prayer service.
Also during the event, area residents were encouraged to fold one of the 1,000 origami cranes, which were to be delivered to a world leader as a sign of peace.
Sponsors of the event included: Camino de Paz Labyrinths, F.R.I.E.N.D.S., Visiting Nurse Service of New York, and George Hardy Houses.
